![]() Many of you have probably seen this quote. It is from my favourite charismatic leader Mahatma Gandhi. "Charismatic leader" is a term which was originated by the sociologist and philosopher Max Weber. I really like this quote because it makes reference to trendy philosophical schools of thought which keep reminding us to "seize the day", "live in the moment", "never take a moment for granted", "just do it"...basically to carpe diem. And then just when you want to seize the moment and live like it is your last and go sky diving or confess your love for your neighbour on Facebook, this quote reminds you that while all of those spontaneous, courageous, daring acts are very meaningful...the truth of the matter is that you will probably not die anytime soon and that you have to have the courage and the wisdom to keep on learning something new every day. How often do we try to really apply ourselves to learning something new...say like a a new language or a new skill? Sure we are exposed to tens of thousands of stimuli each day fighting for our attention but only some of these are truly useful...truly enriching...truly valuable in terms of knowledge. Improving a skill or learning a new one takes motivation, time and dedication. It takes discipline. But unfortunately we are often too tired and too bored to really apply ourselves to learning something new. Instead we seem to sedate our minds with candy crush and expand our horizons with Instagram. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of pretty, visual apps and even gamification but not when it serves to move us in the wrong direction...or in this case, no direction at all. In future posts I will share with you some of my favourite applications which actually help you learn things...useful things...like say how to communicate more effectively in English or how to train your brain to be sharper. For now, I am going to share with you a few more of my favourite learning quotes in the hopes that they will motivate you to "get cracking" on that new skill you decided that you want to develop in 2015 while sipping champagne just two weeks ago on New Years' Eve.
